Most of us think reading a book is straightforward. You start on page one and follow it to the end. We tend to believe we’re reading to understand what is happening on the page.

It’s one of the first things you learn at school once you can read: comprehension. It’s taught and tested, and it’s a fundamental building block of academic success.

But we all know there is more to reading than making sense of the words on the page.

It’s also about perception, interpretation, and reflection.

It’s about emotion, the world around us, and examining what it means to be human. It’s as much about understanding the story as it is about understanding ourselves.

Reading isn’t just following the plot or getting the characters. A brilliantly constructed story, that page-turner that keeps you awake into the early hours, isn’t just a sequence of events typed up by the author.

I share my writing journey on the Writers in the Dark podcast.
